Chinese testing begins

With the winter break over, it’s back to China for the second time already this year for David Higgins this weekend for a test session ahead of the 2008 Chinese Rally Championship.

All eyes will be on David and his co-driver Ieuan Thomas this year after they blitzed the championship last year, winning all five events - a feat nobody had ever achieved before.

“It could be a completely different championship this year,” says David. “Last year the Kaiyang Rally was the fourth round of the championship. This year it’s the first round so we have no idea what weather to expect on it. The first round was extremely hot last year, and by the end of this year we could be taking part in a full snow rally as we move nearer the border of Russia.”

The main reason for the reshuffling of calendar events this year is of course the Olympic Games, which are being held in China.

David will spend this visit to China in the WY rally team Mitsubishi Lancer Evo9 working with Hankook on tyre development.

“Tyre testing is crucial, and can take up a lot of time,” says David. “Every time you run the car there will be different variables affecting the tyres so it’s important to test on as many surfaces as possible to collect data.”

The opening round of the championship, the Kaiyang Rally, will take place on March 28.
