Wales Rally GB: end of rally review
TQ.com crew David Higgins and Ieuan Thomas have taken a fourth place, a sixth place and a third place – all in one weekend, all on one event.
Wales Rally GB counted as the final two rounds of the British Rally Championship, and the crew were registered for the Production Car World Rally Championship fight on the event too. They finished fourth in the first round of the BRC, third on the second round, and sixth in the PWRC.
On the first day, Friday, David reported his Subaru Impreza as being down on power. A spin in the third stage also cost the crew time, but as darkness fell David hit problems in weather conditions which many said were the worst they had seen on Rally GB in years.
“We had problems getting our lamp pod attached properly for some reason,” said David. “We ended up having to use cable ties. It was difficult to see in the rain and fog, the conditions were terrible. At one point we thought we were in the middle of the road, but we realised we weren’t when we hit a bank.”
The crew survived the conditions to finish the first day, which was the first round of the BRC, with fourth place BRC points.
By the end of Saturday David was lying third in the race for the final set of BRC points, despite losing almost three minutes in the opening stage of the day with a puncture. On Saturday night he enjoyed thrilling the crowds in the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff where he and Ieuan received plenty of support from spectators waving TQ.com foam hands in the air.
That just left four stages on Sunday - and David was the fastest BRC driver through the opening one.
But after a relatively trouble free day, David was glad to see the finish ramp in Cardiff by the end saying, "We lost drive in the final stage, we think the front diff’s gone, so we’re glad to make it back.”
The result leaves David sixth overall in the BRC drivers championship, while Ieuan took fifth in the co-drivers championship.
Their fellow TQ.com crew, Hugh Evans and Iestyn Williams, put in a great weekend on their first experience of a World Rally Championship event. Their result included tenth on the final round of the BRC despite them landing heavily and battling against turbo problems. Their results puts Hugh 15th in the BRC drivers championship and Iestyn ninth in the co-drivers championships.
David and Hugh's season points combine to put TQ.com third in the British teams championship.
That’s it for the 2007 BRC, but David, Ieuan, Hugh and Iestyn will be back for more in 2008 – watch this space for details.
